明代中后期，在杭州附近的一个江南小镇，教书先生郭子鱼出身屠夫世家，年轻时便立志放下屠刀，发奋读书，梦想通过科举飞黄腾达。但是命运弄人，他连试不中，最后将全家移居到万卷楼日夜苦读，并在娘子的帮助下开办了名为“万卷楼”的私塾。私塾中有几个年龄不一、性格各异的学童，郭氏夫妇与学童组成了特殊的群体，呈现出寓教于乐的私塾生活。寡妇慧莲、屠夫、绸布店老板、木匠、老镇长、驿卒等组成了“士农工商”多姿多彩的众生相。。Felix from West-Berlin falls in love with Thomas in East-Berlin.
